Infrastructure

METROFOOD-ES is part of the METROFOOD-RI initiative, which consists of two main infrastructures: a physical infrastructure (P-RI) and an electronic infrastructure (e-RI). Both infrastructures—physical and electronic—are interconnected. The P-RI generates new data and methods, which are fed into the e-RI. In turn, the e-RI supports experimental activities by providing metrological tools and data.

Physical Infrastructure (P-RI)

The «Metro» Side

This includes analytical laboratories dedicated to developing and validating new methods for the chemical, physical-chemical, and microbiological characterization of foods and other matrices relevant to the agri-food system. It also involves devices and plants for producing, characterizing, and certifying new Reference Materials (RMs) for the agri-food sector.

The «Food» Side

This encompasses experimental fields, farms, and fisheries dedicated to crop production and animal breeding, as well as small-scale food processing and storage plants. It also includes kitchen laboratories for food preparation, which enable the study of food quality, safety, authenticity, and the characterization and enhancement of products and processes throughout the food chain.

Electronic Infrastructure (e-RI)

The e-RI offers a service-oriented architecture that provides a platform accessible to users across Europe and beyond. It supports the sharing and integration of data, knowledge, and information related to food analysis, including food composition, nutritional content, and levels of contaminants and biomarkers. The e-RI integrates multiple data sources and services to ensure interoperability and facilitate analytical work related to food and nutrition.
